Victorians for Transportation Choice (VTC)
VTC wants our communities to shift to more transit, walking and biking, as a means to meet transportation needs. The ultimate goal is to improve livability while reducing our carbon footprint and other harm. As the Victoria Transit Future Plan states: “Major investments in expanding the road network to accommodate the private automobile do not align with local, regional and provincial planning aspirations.” The Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change commits the provincial and federal governments to shift spending towards low carbon transport solutions.
For the 2018 Municipal Elections, VTC created a questionnaire for candidates in the Greater Victoria Area to answer. Our full questionnaire is available here. We received responses from over half of all candidates. These responses are available here.
Our Coalition Members
The Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition is a member-driven biking organization that seeks to have more people cycling, more places, more often. We advocate for better bikeways and policies at all levels and run biking events that celebrate the fun in biking.
We are a group of Greater Victoria residents dedicated to improving our region’s shared places. Our Mission is to inspire people, neighbourhoods and communities to create vibrant public places that promote health, happiness and well-being. We focus on what happens in ‘the public realm’ in Greater Victoria – in our places, green spaces, on our streets and informal gathering areas. Placemaking is about bringing neighbours, businesses, specialists, visitors and others together to collaborate in creating great places.
The BC Sustainable Energy Association is a member-supported non-profit society working to empower British Columbians to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Our vision is for the world to be entirely powered by renewable energy, and for BC to contribute its share to bring about this transformation.
Island Transformations Organization (ITO) is a group of dedicated individuals working together to collaborate with government and other bodies to have an ecosystem approach to environmental protection and planning as well as transportation options that promote Community, healthy lifestyles and real choice.
To that end, ITO has been advocating for the E&N railway to remain a railway and for investment to happen to electrify it so that it offers to the public a low carbon, real alternative to driving on Vancouver Island.
The Better Transit Alliance is a grassroots group of residents advocating for better public transit in Greater Victoria. We see improving public transit as an important way to advance social and climate justice, as well as making our region a healthier and more pleasant place.
Our original coalition formed during the 2018 Municipal Elections included Walk On Victoria but Walk On Victoria is no longer associated with Victorians for Transportation Choice.
Walking is a healthy and environmentally-friendly form of transportation and recreation that fosters vibrant communities and provides an enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike. Despite these benefits and the popularity of walking among residents, the interests of pedestrians are often overlooked. Walk On, Victoria intends to change that through advocacy and events that promote walking and encourage policymakers to prioritize the interests of pedestrians.
