Running for Oak Bay Mayor
What would be your highest priorities in the next four years to reduce the total energy use and emissions from transportation?
- Develop a Transportation Authority for the CRD who’s mandate would include a) development of a rapid public transit system such as light rail / street car system and b) assuming responsibility the Galloping Goose and Lochside Trail.
- Continue to work on the Cycling Master Plan and consider folding the Plan into the Transportation Authority.
Over the next 4 years, would you support increasing the space for walking, biking, and public transit and reducing that for private motor vehicles in your community? How would you do that?
Yes. Such a mandate would fall under the Transportation Authority noted in the first question.
Would you actively encourage the provincial government to prioritize public transit, walking and biking infrastructure over roadway expansion projects such as the proposed interchanges on the Pat Bay Highway?
Do you support making walking safer and more enjoyable in Oak Bay?
Yes. I am committed to an enhance sidewalk revitalization plan with more funding. I’m also supportive of a Village Revitalization which would include wider sidewalks along Oak Bay Avenue from Foul Bay to the ocean.
What specific policies, projects and expenditures would you support in the next four years to make walking safer and more pleasant in Oak Bay?
The major ones would be as noted in the previous response.
Do you support building a community-wide network of all ages and abilities (“AAA”) bike routes in the next four years?
I am a proponent of the 8/80 model of biking routes. Such an project would of necessity stretch well beyond the next 4 years. Having studied what happened in Copenhagen with their protected biking lanes it appears such an initiative would take significant time to plan and implement. Copenhagen has been working on their plan since the 60’s.
Do you support building a protected bike lane on Cadboro Bay Rd to connect to Ecole Willows School?
Yes. Our new bike lanes along Cadboro run between Foul Bay and Bowker. The next phase should be connecting up with Willows.
Would you support completing the 24/7 bus lanes along the Douglas Street/Highway 1 corridor, as well as along other routes such as the Pat Bay Highway as a high priority for municipalities and the BC government in the next four years?
I am supportive of bus lanes for the stretch of Douglas or Pat Bay from downtown to Uptown area. I am not sufficiently aware of the volume of traffic on those roads to determine a) whether using both roads is required or sustainable and b) whether the duration should be 24/7 or if the goal could be reached with a shorter duration.
Would you support keeping the E&N railway as a railway and actively campaign for electrified passenger and freight services?
My preference would be to maintain a railway but without provincial and federal support this would not be a sustainable plan.
Would you support and actively campaign for street-level electrified rapid transit in the greater Victoria region? If so, along what routes?
Yes. The routes should be determined after an in depth research on what routes would be likely to get the highest use.
In the next four years, would you support removing the requirements for off-street vehicle parking from new and infill developments?
No. Before such a step is taken there would have to be a community consensus.
