Dorothy Hartshorne

Running for North Saanich Mayor

What would be your highest priorities in the next four years to reduce the total energy use and emissions from transportation?

Continue to develop the North Saanich network of cycling paths, work with the CRD and other municipalities in finding ways to improve our integrated transit systems on a local and regional level, lobby the provincial government for increased funding to support improvements in the current bus system and to develop an integrated transit plan that addresses current congestion problems and plans for an energy efficient future.

Over the next 4 years, would you support increasing the space for walking, biking, and public transit and reducing that for private motor vehicles in your community? How would you do that?

Yes. Work to improve our public transit system while continuing to improve the connectivity in our trail and cycling network.

Would you actively encourage the provincial government to prioritize public transit, walking and biking infrastructure over roadway expansion projects such as the proposed interchanges on the Pat Bay Highway?

The work on public transport must be concurrent with improvements to the Pat Bay Highway. Public safety is a priority and the Pat Bay highway needs to have its safety concerns addressed.

Do you support making walking safer and more enjoyable in North Saanich?

What specific policies, projects and expenditures would you support in the next four years to make walking safer and more pleasant in North Saanich?

Ongoing maintenance of existing trails while continuing to improve the connectivity of our trail and walking path network.

Do you support building a community-wide network of all ages and abilities (“AAA”) bike routes in the next four years?

Do you support completing and adding protection to the existing bike lane on McDonald Park Rd?

Would you support completing the 24/7 bus lanes along the Douglas Street/Highway 1 corridor, as well as along other routes such as the Pat Bay Highway as a high priority for municipalities and the BC government in the next four years?

Yes. We need to accommodate and encourage current transit users while planning for future needs.

Would you support keeping the E&N railway as a railway and actively campaign for electrified passenger and freight services?

Yes. We need to plan for the future.

Would you support and actively campaign for street-level electrified rapid transit in the greater Victoria region? If so, along what routes?

I will support planning and implementation of electrified rapid transit. I can’t make an informed comment on proposed routes because I live in North Saanich and don’t actively commute to Victoria on a regular basis.

In the next four years, would you support removing the requirements for off-street vehicle parking from new and infill developments?

I will review parking requirements for each development as they come forward.

In the next four years, how, would you activate and bring more people into public spaces within your municipality, including sidewalks, public squares, streets and parks?

Work with council and staff to support the residents and community groups that currently actively participate in the ongoing maintenance of our existing parks and use our extensive trail network. I will always look for ways to expand and improve programs we already have in place as well continue to create new and innovative programs to engage residents in the use of our public spaces.
